You have big goals.

You want to study again.

You want to save money.

You want to stop procrastinating.

But here’s the truth:

None of those goals matter if your health is failing.

When your body feels heavy, inflamed, tired, or unbalanced, even the smallest task feels overwhelming. Meal prep? Nope. Motivation? Gone. This is why so many of us start strong, then fall off track.

But here’s the key to lasting success:
Start again. Every single day.

Your Morning Ritual = Your Daily Reset
The best way to stay on track with your programme is to build your success in the first 60 minutes of the day.

Here’s what that looks like:

Take your meds and your vitamins.

Eat your egg (or your preferred protein).

Prepare your meals for the day (or at least have the ingredients)

Weigh yourself – not to punish, but to stay present. Skipping the scale (or a coaching session) is often the first step off the path.

Drink your water.

Breathe. Stretch. Move. Commit.

That’s it. These simple habits set the tone. The days you follow them, you win. The days you don’t? You start again tomorrow. This is not a sprint — it’s your life and a lifestyle.

The Weather, The Stress, The Willpower Problem
Let’s talk about the three biggest derailing forces — and how we manage them.

1. Keep Moving (Even When It’s Cold)
Yes, it’s winter. It’s dark early. You crave more, move less. But cold weather is also when most people gain weight. So instead of retreating, reset. Short walks. Warm soups. Hot tea. Layered clothes. Your health doesn’t hibernate – neither should your habits.

2. Deal With the Big Stuff (Not the Little Stuff)
Stress will knock your programme sideways — but usually it’s the big stressors doing the damage:

Divorce.

Illness in the family.

Grief.

Work burnout.

In those times, food becomes comfort. That’s normal.
But it’s important to name your stress and support yourself differently — with structure, not sabotage. Coaching is your best weapon to breaking down your stress, talking about it and planning for it.

Stop worrying about the small things (like one “bad” meal). Focus instead on staying grounded through the chaos. We can help you through it.

3. Your Hypothalamus is the Boss
HCG works not because it’s magic – but because it resets your hypothalamus: the part of your brain that controls hunger, energy, and even your motivation. That’s why, even when you cheat, you can bounce back the next day – because your system is still supported.

HCG helps you:

Stay mentally sharp

Keep hunger under control

Reset your weight-regulating mechanisms

And when the HCG phase ends? You’ve already built a strong foundation to move forward.

The Net Effect: Always Losing, Always Learning
Think of it this way:
With saving, if you save for weeks but blow your savings in one weekend, you’re back to zero. With losing weight, if you eat well 80% of the time, you still lose weight 80% of the time.

That’s the miracle of metabolic support:

When you cheat, you pause.

When you reset, you continue from where you left off.

No more “starting over” from scratch.
No more guilt spirals. Just consistent, imperfect progress.

What Happens After the Programme?
You won’t stay on medication forever.

During this programme, you’ll:
– Fix your blood pressure.
– Reverse Type 2 Diabetes.
– Get off all the harmful pharmaceuticals.
– Learn real, nourishing eating habits.

And then?

We’ll teach you intermittent fasting — not as a punishment, but as a powerful, long-term tool to stay lean, focused, and healthy. But intermittent fasting only works after you clean up your food, reduce inflammation, and train your body to need less, not more.

It’s not a shortcut — it’s a graduation.

Final Word: Just Start Again
The difference between those who succeed and those who give up?
Not willpower. Not perfection. It’s the decision to start again.

I’m here to guide you, coach you, support you — but you must take the first step.

Book the session.

Buy the meds.

Show up.

The clients who succeed are not the ones with perfect lives — they’re the ones who keep engaging. They take their meds daily. They attend coaching.

They restart every morning, not every three months.

The meds won’t do the work for you — you do the work by showing up and staying connected to your goals. Taking your meds is not a waste. It’s a signal to your brain and body that health is your top priority. And when that becomes your anchor, everything else starts to fall into place.

Make the call. Reconnect. Get back on track.
Start again today – and keep starting, every day.

In winter, it’s only natural to crave hot drinks. Your body instinctively seeks warmth and comfort to counter the cold outside. When temperatures drop, your body works harder to maintain its internal heat, and warm drinks provide an instant sense of coziness from within.

Beyond physical warmth, sipping something hot taps into the emotional core, triggering feelings of safety, nostalgia, and pure relaxation – a bit like being wrapped up in a soft blanket. Even the simple ritual of holding a warm mug can soothe stress and create a grounding moment of pause during the darker, busier days. It’s one of the easiest, most powerful ways to restore balance and comfort in the colder months!

Water Consumption Declines in Winter

You might not feel as thirsty when it’s cold, but your body still needs water just as much as in summer. Cooler weather reduces your thirst signals because you’re not sweating as much, but you continue losing water through breathing especially in dry, heated indoor air. Still or sparkling water remains the gold standard — no calories, refreshing, and perfect any time of day. Just because you’re not feeling parched doesn’t mean you don’t need to hydrate!

Good Old Faithful Warm Drinks

Here’s a list of lovely, comforting drinks you can enjoy while staying firmly on track with your goals:

Green Tea — Full of antioxidants and a gentle metabolism booster.

Chai Tea (or Vanilla Chai Tea) — Spicy, warm, and packed with flavour.

Black Coffee — A classic pick-me-up with zero calories. Just be mindful of its diuretic effect and sip extra water to stay balanced.

Caffeine can cause a mild diuretic effect, meaning your body may lose a little more fluid. It’s not harmful if you’re staying on top of your water intake – just another reason to keep that water bottle handy.

Drinks That Can Trip You Up in Winter

When it’s freezing outside, it’s tempting to reach for hot chocolate, cappuccinos, and all those creamy, sweet café specials.

But beware – these indulgent favourites often sneak in loads of hidden sugars and fats, which can slow your progress without you even realising it. Even “small” treats add up quickly in calories during winter, when it’s easiest to underestimate what we’re drinking.

Stick to clean, simple options whenever you can, and you’ll stay ahead of the game without feeling deprived.

Why We Cut Dairy

Most supermarket milk comes from A1 cows (like Holstein and Friesian breeds). Their milk contains a type of beta-casein protein that, during digestion, breaks down into a compound called BCM-7. BCM-7 has been linked to inflammation, bloating, cramps, and digestive discomfort in sensitive individuals.

A2 milk, from breeds like Jersey and Guernsey cows, contains a different, gentler form of beta-casein – it doesn’t create BCM-7 at all. Even though A1 and A2 milk taste very similar.

We also avoid dairy because modern milk often contains growth hormones, antibiotic residues, and is heavily pasteurised, stripping away natural nutrients.

Cutting dairy helps reduce inflammation, rebalance digestion, and creates a cleaner environment in the body allowing you to heal, feel better, and lose fat more efficiently.

Simple Cozy Warm Drinks

Herbal teas – Peppermint, rooibos, chamomile, and hibiscus are naturally caffeine-free and lovely at any time of day.

Spiced cinnamon tea – Simply brew cinnamon sticks in hot water; it smells like dessert and tastes like comfort.

Lemon and ginger tea – Steep fresh lemon slices and ginger in hot water for a zesty, digestion-friendly boost.

Apple cider vinegar drink – Mix hot water with 1 tablespoon of ACV, add a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a drop of stevia if needed.

Abilities Indulgent Coffee Hacks

Cocoa Dream – Stir a spoonful of unsweetened cocoa powder into your coffee for a rich, mocha-like treat. All the flavour, none of the guilt.

Vanilla Velvet – Add a few drops of pure vanilla essence for a soft, sweet aroma that transforms your cup into a cosy café-style indulgence.

Cinnamon Bliss – Sprinkle cinnamon into your coffee for a naturally sweet, warming flavour that’s pure comfort in a cup.

With these little tricks, your coffee becomes a daily moment of pure, luxurious satisfaction (no cream, no sugar needed).

Don’t let winter weight gain sneak up on you!

This is the perfect time to take control, feel amazing, and stay strong – before the cold, comfort foods, and hidden sugars start to pile on the kilos. My programme will give you the personalised support, structure, and proven strategies you need to lose fat, boost your health, and stay strong all winter long.

Don’t wait until spring to start over – call me today and let’s get you feeling your absolute best this season!

In a world moving faster than ever, raising resilient, mentally strong children has never been more important – or more challenging. Today, more than marks on a report card or trophies on a shelf, what children desperately need is the unwavering presence of their parents: socially, emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Children are born neurologically fragile — not resilient. They are completely vulnerable at birth and rely heavily on the adults around them to regulate their emotions and teach them how to cope with stress. Between birth and three years old, a child’s brain goes through its most critical phase of development. During this window, mothers in particular serve as the child’s external nervous system, calming fear, distress, sadness, and buffering stress through emotional attunement and physical presence.

It’s only after the age of three that a child begins to build an internal sense of safety, which becomes the bedrock for future resilience and personality development. But even beyond the early years, children need their parents throughout childhood and adolescence. From ages nine to twenty-five, the second major phase of brain development occurs, and during this time, the emotional presence of parents is critical in helping young people process their experiences, feelings, and setbacks.

True resilience – the ability to adapt to adversity, manage emotions, and thrive — does not simply “happen.” It is modelled daily through the way parents live and interact with their children. Children need mentally healthy parents: parents who are self-aware, sensitive, empathetic, and capable of regulating their own emotions. When parents invest in their own healing – through therapy, coaching, faith communities, and strong friendships – they give their children the greatest gift: a stable foundation to grow upon.

Children also need to see their parents’ taking responsibility for their own mental and physical health. Exercising with your child, spending time outdoors in fresh air, laughing, and playing in the sunshine helps lower cortisol levels and promotes emotional regulation – for both parent and child. These activities are not simply “nice to have”; they are crucial. They teach children that movement, connection, and joy are essential parts of a healthy life.

Similarly, sitting down at the breakfast or dinner table without screens, waking up an hour earlier to truly hold emotional space for your child, and reading good books, scripture, or praying together build not only intellectual capacity but emotional strength and deep relational security. These daily rituals show children that love is active, disciplined, and consistent.

In a society where co-sleeping and physical affection are sometimes frowned upon, we forget how essential touch and closeness are. Helicopter rides on dad’s shoulders, gentle tickles, shared laughter, and lots of kisses all build a child’s sense of belonging and emotional safety.

Fathers also play a unique biological role. The hormone vasopressin – more prevalent in fathers – fuels protective behaviours that teach children how to manage excitement and aggression, which is crucial in societies like South Africa where children need strong role models to navigate violence and instability. And when biological fathers are absent, extended family members and close friends can step into these vital protective roles.

Community is another essential pillar. Faith-based communities, in particular, offer long-term mental health benefits according to studies, including one from Harvard. Children who grow up attending religious services regularly show greater emotional resilience and overall mental well-being later in life. Today, we must reclaim the importance of communal life, strong family ties, and meaningful friendships if we are to raise healthy children.

Technology must also be carefully managed. Children today need monitored screen time, not unrestricted access. They need animals to play with, fresh air, unstructured time outdoors, and plenty of real-world problem-solving experiences. A childhood rich in nature, movement, and human connection is the best inoculation against anxiety, depression, and emotional fragility.

At the heart of it all is one simple truth: parents must prioritize their own health and healing first. Before my own child, I thought I could “do it on my own.” Motherhood taught me otherwise. I learned to reach out, ask for help, and value the abundant resources around me – affordable childcare, strong family networks, and the beauty of raising a child alongside grandparents, friends, and a loving community.

We must stop idolizing money and corporate status over motherhood and parenting. We must create more opportunities for entrepreneurial work and flexible careers that allow mothers (and fathers) to remain emotionally present during the critical years of their children’s development. Time raising children should not be punished or hidden in gaps on a CV; it should be celebrated as leadership of the highest order.

Children must also be taught to tolerate frustration – a skill at the core of true learning and resilience. In primary school, marks are far less important than the development of patience, empathy, emotional regulation, and persistence. These are the traits that build strong nations, thriving families, and fulfilled lives.

In the end, we must remember: children do not learn resilience by being pushed to perform. They learn it by being deeply loved, consistently nurtured, and wisely guided by adults who are willing to do the hard internal work themselves. They need to see us live what we hope for them – socially, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Only then can they grow up strong enough to meet the challenges of the world with grace, courage, and joy.

If we want to raise resilient, mentally strong children, we must first be willing to lead ourselves with discipline, love, and presence. Children thrive when they see their parent’s model healthy eating, regular exercise, emotional regulation, and faith-filled living. This is not an easy journey, but it is the most important one you will ever take – and you don’t have to do it alone. If you are ready to invest in your family’s future by investing in yourself, seek out coaching, find a community, and start building the structures your children need to flourish. The small daily choices you make today will ripple through generations. Now is the time to lead with courage, sacrifice, and hope – your children are counting on you.

In South Africa, stress isn’t just the garden-variety kind—it’s deeply embedded in the realities of daily life. From economic instability and high unemployment to the constant threat of crime and violence, the pressures are constant and unrelenting. Add to that the widespread inequality and poverty that many South Africans face, and it’s clear why stress levels are higher in this country. For many, food becomes a coping mechanism, an emotional crutch to help deal with the complexities of life.

Unlike drugs or alcohol, eating is a socially accepted way to manage stress, but it comes with consequences. Emotional eating—reaching for high-calorie comfort foods when under stress—becomes a natural response, but the short-term relief it provides can lead to long-term health problems, such as obesity or being “skinny fat.” With stress and emotions influencing what we eat, our ability to manage our weight is greatly affected.

The Link Between Stress and Weight Gain

Chronic stress triggers a series of physiological changes that hinder weight loss, primarily through elevated cortisol levels, which promote fat storage, especially in the abdominal area. Stress also disrupts sleep, affecting metabolism and appetite-regulating hormones, leading to overeating. It causes cravings for high-sugar, high-fat comfort foods, contributing to insulin resistance and weight gain. Additionally, stress can slow digestion, impair nutrient absorption, and increase inflammation, further hindering fat loss and promoting metabolic issues. Finally, stress reduces motivation to exercise and can lead to muscle breakdown, lowering metabolism and making weight loss even harder.

Emotional Eating: The Coping Mechanism of Choice

For many South Africans, eating becomes a way to deal with the relentless pressure of daily life. Whether it’s stress from economic hardships, fears about safety, or guilt over not doing enough for others, food provides a temporary escape. In fact, it’s often easier to reach for something comforting and familiar than to confront the emotions head-on. But this temporary relief from food can turn into a pattern, leading to unhealthy eating habits, weight gain, and, ultimately, a negative cycle that’s hard to break.

The key here is understanding that emotional eating is common in South Africa, and it’s not just about poor choices—it’s about coping with overwhelming stress. Given that so many people struggle in silence without a sounding board or the right support, it’s understandable that these behaviours continue.

Why South Africa’s Stress Is Unique

What sets South African stress apart is the unique set of challenges people face. Beyond the day-to-day pressures, many South Africans live with the weight of historical trauma and systemic barriers—challenges that can feel insurmountable. For some, there’s a collective guilt around the nation’s inequality and poverty, with many wondering if they’re doing enough to help. Yet, with so many people affected by stress in various ways, it’s important to recognize that you’re not alone in feeling overwhelmed.

This stress isn’t just a personal burden; it’s a collective experience that shapes South Africa’s mental and emotional health. Without a proper support system, it’s no surprise that food becomes an easy way to cope.

Resilience in South Africa: The Power of Support

Building resilience in South Africa requires more than just personal strength—it requires community support and empathy. South Africans are known for their ability to come together in difficult times, sharing resources, providing emotional support, and helping each other navigate the challenges of everyday life. Whether it’s through community organisations, mutual support groups, or family, we understand the power of coming together to survive and thrive.

In this environment, a key part of resilience is recognising that small actions can lead to big change. Whether it’s making healthier choices, setting aside time for self-care, or simply opening up about struggles, each step forward is important. These actions, though small, can create a ripple effect that strengthens not only individuals but entire communities.

For those struggling with emotional eating, it’s crucial to build a foundation of support. Without someone to talk to, it’s easy to fall back on unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating. But with the right guidance, change is possible.

A Uniquely South African Solution

Understanding the deep, multifaceted stress that South Africans experience, I’ve created a weight loss and behavioural coaching program that speaks directly to these challenges. My approach is designed to help you navigate stress, emotional eating, and addictive behaviours, with the right blend of empathy and expertise.

I don’t just focus on weight loss; I address the root causes of your eating habits, offering ongoing support through weekly coaching or bi-monthly sessions. In South Africa, where empathy and a safe space to speak openly are rare, my coaching offers a sounding board, understanding, and the tools needed to overcome these struggles.

If you’ve been facing the weight of South African stress and are struggling to break free from emotional eating, my program is the support you need. Together, we’ll uncover the underlying causes of your eating habits and create a path to lasting change.

Call me today for a uniquely South African intervention that empowers you to take control of your weight, health and well-being.

Boundaries aren’t about keeping people out — they’re about keeping you in: in alignment, in integrity, and in your power.

For many, obesity becomes an unconscious boundary — a physical barrier that keeps people at arm’s length when emotional boundaries are missing, blurred, or have been violated.

Why Clients Often Struggle with Boundaries

Not all clients have a poor relationship with food — but almost all of them struggle with boundaries.

Here’s why:

They fear being seen as selfish or rude

They were conditioned from childhood that love equals self-sacrifice

They suffer from low self-worth or identify as “the helper” or “fixer”

They fear rejection or carry guilt and shame

They’re addicted to external validation — being liked feels more important than being healthy

Signs a Client Has Weak Boundaries (and Why It Matters)

When a client has weak or non-existent boundaries, it doesn’t just show up on the scale. It shows up in their behaviour, timekeeping, relationships — and in how they engage with coaching.

Here’s what I often see:

They miss sessions or cancel last-minute — sometimes without explanation

They don’t follow through on agreed actions — even though they know what to do

They ghost me after cheating on the plan — not because they’re lazy or lack willpower, but because they’re ashamed

They message after hours or expect support on Sundays — because they’re stuck in crisis-mode and have poor time boundaries

They don’t pay on time, or avoid communication about financial difficulty — sometimes never paying for services or products already received

But here’s the deeper truth:

👉 These aren’t time or money problems — they’re boundary problems rooted in shame, guilt, and low self-worth

👉 When someone has no boundaries with themselves, they avoid accountability — not because they don’t care, but because it’s painful to face where they’ve fallen short

Why It’s Not Too Late

It’s never too late to build strong, healthy boundaries — and behavioural coaching is one of the only evidence-based ways to do it.

Dr Henry Cloud, clinical psychologist and co-author of Boundaries, puts it simply: “Boundaries define us. They define what is me and what is not me.”

Most of my clients have spent years trying to lose weight, not realising the issue isn’t just food. It’s the absence of structure, self-protection, and self-respect. In coaching, we don’t just talk about willpower — we build boundaries that protect your time, your energy, your goals, and your emotional safety.

Every client is different, which is why we tackle the areas you struggle with most — whether it’s saying no to toxic people, sticking to your food plan, or showing up even when it’s uncomfortable.

With boundaries, weight loss stops being chaotic and emotional — and starts becoming predictable, manageable, and empowering.

This Is Where the Cycle Breaks

If you can learn to manage your behaviour — what you eat, drink, say yes to, and allow in your space — you can take control of everything else in your life.

Your weight isn’t the only thing that needs to change — your boundaries do too. If you want lasting fat loss, better habits, and true control over your time, energy, and emotions, it starts with building the internal structure to support it.

Call today, take back control, and let’s build the boundaries that will transform your body — and your life.

We often think of bones as rigid structures that simply hold us up. But bones are living, dynamic tissues that influence everything from cognitive function to metabolism, muscle strength, and hormone production. Ignoring bone health isn’t just a ticket to frailty—it’s a direct threat to your ability to perform, age well, and maintain independence.

How Your Bones Shape Your Health and Performance

Thomas Edison once said, “The chief function of the body is to carry the brain around.” But if you’re truly smart, you’ll realise that your bones are just as critical. They are active communicators, constantly interacting with your muscles, brain, and metabolism. One key protein, osteocalcin, released by bone cells, has incredible effects on the body. It helps regulate brain function, improves insulin sensitivity, boosts muscle performance, and even stimulates testosterone production in men.

This means that your bones are talking to your brain, muscles, and metabolism. Neglecting them cuts off a crucial system that keeps your body thriving.

Bones Across a Lifetime: Why Age and Gender Matter

Bones change dramatically as we age, according to Dr Vonda Wright “Old age is a gift denied to many. Make today Count”.

Children & Adolescents (0–28 years): High-impact activities like running and gymnastics are critical for building peak bone mass. Skipping these increases fracture risk later in life.

Young Adults (30s–40s): Bone mass plateaus. Strength training and mobility work are essential.

Midlife (40s–60s): Women start losing bone density due to estrogen decline. Men maintain their density longer due to testosterone, but they still need prevention.

Older Adults (70+): Without intervention, bone loss accelerates, increasing the risk of fractures and frailty.

The Hard Truth About Osteoporosis and Fractures

One in two women will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in her lifetime. Women account for 70% of all hip fractures, which are often devastating. If you break your hip:

There’s a 50% chance you will never regain your pre-fall function.

There’s a 30% chance you will die within a year due to complications from the fracture, like infections or bed rest.

Many people lose their independence, requiring long-term care and giving up the ability to live alone or drive.

Men also face risks, especially if they have metabolic issues or neglect bone health.

Building and Maintaining Strong Bones: The Role of Exercise and Nutrition

Exercise and nutrition are your best defences.

A 2004 study of Masters Athletes found that with chronic exercise, bone density remained high well into the 80s. High-impact activities like basketball, running, and weightlifting help signal bones to grow stronger by applying stress. These exercises are key for maintaining bone health.

To optimize bone health, pair exercise with proper nutrition:

Calcium is essential, but it’s better to get it from food sources rather than supplements.

Vitamin D3, Vitamin K2, and boron aid calcium absorption and help improve bone density.

The Gut-Bone Connection: Absorption Changes With Age

As we age, nutrient absorption decreases due to changes in the gut. Women in midlife require methylated vitamins, which are easier to absorb. The best approach to boosting bone density is to get calcium from food and complement it with vitamin D3, K2, and boron to improve absorption.

The Takeaway: You Control Your Future Mobility and Performance

Bones are not just structural—they are master communicators. They influence your brain, metabolism, and muscles. If you neglect them, you’re cutting off a critical system in your body.

Building and maintaining bone health is not about avoiding fractures—it’s about staying strong, independent, and performing at your best at any age. Start early, stay consistent, and prioritize bone health through exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle choices.

If you or your partner wake up feeling like you’ve barely slept, if snoring shakes the walls at night, or if you find yourself dozing off at your desk, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) could be the culprit. This isn’t just about noisy nights—it’s a serious condition that can be life-threatening if left untreated. And if excess weight is a factor, the risk skyrockets. Don’t ignore the signs—your health (and your partner’s sanity) depends on it!

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a disorder caused by the collapse of the pharyngeal airway during sleep, leading to repeated interruptions in breathing. These apnea episodes can last for seconds to minutes, reducing oxygen supply to your brain and body.

The consequences?

Disturbed sleep for both you and your partner

Morning headaches and extreme fatigue

Daytime drowsiness—falling asleep at your desk, while watching TV, or even while driving

Poor concentration and reduced productivity at work

Increased risk of serious health conditions like hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes

The Link Between Obesity and Sleep Apnea

Obesity is the number one risk factor for sleep Apnea. Excess weight—particularly around the neck and abdomen—puts pressure on the airway, making it more likely to collapse during sleep. In addition, visceral fat around the abdomen reduces lung capacity, making breathing even more difficult.

Factors that worsen sleep Apnea in obese individuals include:
✔ Excess fat in the throat narrowing the airway
✔ Higher inflammation levels increasing airway resistance
✔ Hormonal imbalances affecting breathing control
✔ Alcohol and smoking, which further relax throat muscles and worsen Apnea episodes

Why Ignoring Sleep Apnea is Dangerous

The most severe consequence of sleep Apnea isn’t just snoring—it’s the dangerously low oxygen levels that occur throughout the night. If untreated, sleep Apnea can lead to:
✅ High blood pressure (hypertension) – increasing your risk of heart attacks and strokes

✅ Heart failure and irregular heartbeats – making your heart work harder than it should

✅ Diabetes and weight gain – poor sleep leads to hormonal imbalances that increase cravings and fat storage

✅ Cognitive impairment – lack of oxygen can damage brain function over time, leading to memory loss and brain fog

The First Step to Reversing Sleep Apnea? Weight Loss!

Losing weight is the most effective, natural, and long-term solution to reversing sleep Apnea. Even a 5–10% reduction in body weight can dramatically improve breathing, reduce snoring, and enhance sleep quality.

At Abilities Weight Management our scientifically backed weight loss program focuses on:

✅ Reducing visceral fat – the primary cause of airway obstruction

✅ Eliminating alcohol and sugar addiction – which worsen Apnea and weight gain

✅ Helping you lose up to 10kg per month – leading to rapid improvements in energy and sleep

✅ Providing psychological and emotional support – to tackle eating habits and triggers

How to Get Started

If you:

❌ Feel exhausted even after 8+ hours of sleep

❌ Struggle with concentration and daytime drowsiness

❌ Have been told you snore loudly or stop breathing at night

❌ Are overweight and concerned about your health

It’s time to act before it’s too late. Book a consultation today!

By committing to your health and losing weight, you can eliminate sleep Apnea, reclaim your energy, and prevent life-threatening complications.

Studies in South Africa have shown a significant proportion of the population suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. It is linked to health conditions such as bone diseases, immune system issues and overall poorer health outcomes.

Individuals with more melanin in their skin are generally more prone to deficiency especially if they have limited exposure to sunlight. Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, acts as a natural barrier to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun, which is necessary for the skin to produce vitamin D. The more melanin present in the skin, the less efficient the body is at synthesizing vitamin D from sunlight.

People with darker skin require more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as people with lighter skin. This is why vitamin D deficiency is often more common in people with darker skin.

Extensive research was done with African Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic and the pattern observed in these studies highlighted a link between low vitamin D levels and an increased risk of severe illness or mortality from COVID-19.

Abilities Weight Management urges every client to take vitamin D but especially clients with darker skin, it believed that it plays a role in the heightened vulnerability with more severe outcomes with many viruses not only COVID. Researchers continue to investigate the role of vitamin D in immune health, but I strongly suggest every client have their vitamin D3 levels checked and supplement.

The Benefits of Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)

Vitamin D3 is considered more of a hormone than a traditional vitamin due to its unique role and how it functions in the body.

1. Synthesis and Activation:

Unlike most vitamins, which must be obtained from food or supplements, vitamin D3 is produced by the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight (UVB radiation). It’s a precursor molecule that needs to undergo two key activation steps to become fully functional:

First step: In the liver, vitamin D3 is converted into 25-hydroxyvitamin D (also called calcidiol).

Second step: In the kidneys, it is further converted into its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (also called calcitriol).

2. Hormonal Activity:

The active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, acts like a hormone in the body. It circulates through the bloodstream and binds to specific receptors (called vitamin D receptors, or VDRs) found in various tissues, including the intestines, bones, kidneys, and immune cells. This binding triggers a range of physiological effects.

3. Hormone-Like Effects:

Because vitamin D acts in the body in a manner similar to other hormones — by traveling through the bloodstream and signalling cells to perform specific functions — it’s often referred to as a hormone rather than just a vitamin.

Take Vitamin D3 with Vitamin K2 Together

Taking vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 together is beneficial for overall health, particularly for bone and cardiovascular health. These two vitamins work synergistically in the body, to enhance their effects. Here’s what happens when they are taken together:

1. Enhanced Calcium Regulation:

Vitamin D3 plays a key role in calcium absorption from the intestines into the bloodstream. However, it doesn’t directly control where the calcium goes once it’s in the bloodstream. This is where vitamin K2 comes in.

Vitamin K2 activates proteins (such as osteocalcin and matrix Gla-protein) that help direct calcium to the bones and teeth while preventing calcium from depositing in soft tissues like arteries and kidneys.

Without enough vitamin K2, calcium may end up being deposited in the wrong places, such as in arteries, which can lead to arterial calcification, increasing the risk of heart disease.

2. Bone Health:

Vitamin D3 helps increase calcium absorption, which is crucial for building and maintaining strong bones.

Vitamin K2 works to ensure that the absorbed calcium is properly utilized in the bones. It helps activate osteocalcin, a protein that binds calcium to bone matrix, promoting bone mineralization and strength.

Together, these vitamins work to improve bone density and reduce the risk of conditions like osteoporosis and fractures.

3. Cardiovascular Health:

Vitamin K2 plays a role in preventing the calcification of blood vessels by activating a protein called Matrix Gla-protein (MGP), which inhibits calcium from being deposited in the arteries.

Vitamin D3, while beneficial for cardiovascular function, can indirectly contribute to arterial calcification if calcium isn’t properly directed to the bones. Vitamin K2 helps counteract this potential risk, supporting cardiovascular health.

Thus, the combination of vitamin D3 and K2 helps to balance calcium metabolism, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease and improving vascular health.

Food labels offer far more than just nutrition facts and ingredients!

Much like William Shakespeare’s famous quote from Romeo and Juliet: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”, this popular saying suggests that the true value of something lies in its essence, not its name. However, this idea doesn’t quite apply to food labels.

In this article, I’ve chosen to analyse three mayonnaise brands. As a fan of mayonnaise, I probably should have picked a different product to dissect, but perhaps this exploration won’t turn me off mayonnaise entirely… or, if it does, I may just be forced to make my own!

Ingredients Listed on Food Labels

Before diving into the nutritional facts (which is a topic for another article), I’d like to focus on the ingredients listed on food labels, particularly the fats. Understanding the hierarchy of ingredients can help you identify the main components of a product and enable you to make informed choices that align with your dietary preferences or restrictions. It’s important to note that food labelling is governed by specific rules followed by regulators around the world.

The Rules

Descending Order by Weight: The primary ingredient by weight appears first, even if it’s water or sugar.

Sub-Ingredients: If an ingredient is made up of multiple components (e.g., chocolate chips contain sugar, cocoa, and milk), those sub-ingredients must also be listed, often in parentheses.

Additives and Minor Ingredients: Ingredients that constitute less than 2% of the product’s weight (e.g., spices, flavourings, or preservatives) may sometimes be grouped and listed at the end or under a collective name, depending on the regulations.

Allergens: Common allergens (e.g., nuts, milk, soy, wheat) must be clearly indicated, often in bold or in a separate allergen statement.

“Contains” Statement: Some regions require a “contains” statement summarising major allergens or key ingredients.

Our Three Contestants

Heinz Mayonnaise

Ingredients: Water, Soybean Oil (30%), Vinegar, Egg Yolk, Modified Starches, Sugar, Salt, Mustard Flour, Thickener (Xanthan Gum), Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate), Antioxidant (Calcium Disodium EDTA), Mustard Extract.

Allergens: For allergens see ingredients in Bold. Contains: Egg & Mustard.

Hellman’s Mayonnaise

Ingredients: Soybean Oil, Water, Whole Eggs, Distilled Vinegar, Egg Yolks, Salt, Sugar, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Calcium Disodium EDTA (Used to protect quality), Natural Flavours.

Contains: Egg.

Crosse & Blackwell Mayonnaise

Ingredients: Vegetable Oil (Minimum 52%) [Sunflower Seed and/or Soya Bean (Antioxidant TBHQ (E319))], Water, Cane Sugar, Vinegar, Egg, Acidity Regulators (E270, E330), Salt (Non-Iodated), Thickeners (E412, E410), Flavourings, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate (E202), Sodium Benzoate (E211)], Colourants (E104, E110).

Allergens: Eggs and Soya. Made in a factory that handles cow’s milk

Key Elements That Matter

The First Few Ingredients

They make up most of the product and should be whole, minimally processed foods rather than artificial items. I am feeling good about the water, vinegar and egg yolks. The red flags are things like high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, sugar (or its aliases) and artificial additives.

Most homemade mayonnaise is high in fat so the vegetable oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil is not a surprise, but it is important to understand what oil is used in your mayonnaise.

The Oil Showdown

Partially Hydrogenated vs. Processed Vegetable Oils vs. Unrefined Oils

Partially hydrogenated refers to the chemical process used to alter the structure of vegetable oils. Hydrogen gas is added to liquid vegetable oils under high pressure and this process partially saturates the oil, transforming it from a liquid into a semi-solid state at room temperature. This improves shelf life and stability and enhances texture. Partial hydrogenation produces trans fats, a type of unsaturated fat with an altered structure.

Trans fats are linked to negative health effects and can raise the risk of heart disease. Due to health concerns, partially hydrogenated oils have been largely phased out or banned in many countries, including U.S., EU and South Africa.

Processed Vegetable or Seed Oils refer to oils that have undergone various methods of processing, in other words multiple steps of extraction, purification and modification to make them suitable for cooking and food production. They come from a variety of plant sources such as soybean, corn, canola, safflower, sunflower, rapeseed, peanut, cottonseed and palm.

Processed vegetables/seed oils are widely used in cooking and food production due to their affordability and neutral flavour, but it is recommended to consume them in moderation or not at all (if possible). They are often high in omega-6 fatty acids which can contribute to inflammation and all beneficial nutrients like antioxidants are stripped away in the refining process. This process makes these oils less nutritionally dense and more prone to oxidation.

Unrefined Oils like Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Cold-Pressed or Virgin Avocado Oil, and Virgin or Extra Virgin Coconut Oil are made through mechanical processes without heat or chemicals, preserving their natural flavours, nutrients, and antioxidants. Opting for less processed, nutrient-dense oils is generally a healthier choice.

Looking Only at Fats

We haven’t looked at all the ingredients and this article mainly looked at the first five ingredients in each mayonnaise and focused on the fats used. We don’t really have all the information yet but what we do know is that they all contain a lot of processed vegetable oils. They all use soybean oil and Crosse & Blackwell admit to using sunflower oil too and indicate that they are using Antioxidant TBHQ (E319).

Antioxidant TBHQ (E319)

TBHQ is a derivative of hydroquinone (found in plants to stabilize oils and fats), it acts as an antioxidant to prolong shelf life. It is approved as a food additive in U.S. and EU but there are concerns about it potential for toxicity. In animal studies it causes liver damage, tumors and DNA damage. Some individuals experience allergic reactions like asthma or dermatitis when consuming TBHQ and it is also thought to affect the endocrine system. Potentially harmful and may have a cumulative effect over time.

Not Hating on Mayonnaise

In conclusion, the decision is ultimately yours to make. From my analysis, it seems that Crosse & Blackwell contains a higher fat content at 52%, compared to the 30% stated in Heinz’s ingredients. Hellmann’s, however, doesn’t list a percentage in their ingredients, so we’ll need to check the actual grams on the nutrition label. While TBHQ is approved by food regulators, I still advise exercising caution. In my next article, I’ll continue to explore food ingredients, perhaps focusing on sugars, modified starches, thickeners, and preservatives. Stay informed and stay safe!

In your first 90-minute coaching session, we don’t focus heavily on nutrition tips (that comes later) but instead, we dive deeper—into your mind. I sketch out the structure of your brain and introduce you to the concept of your three brains. Based on the Triune Brain Model by neuroscientist Paul MacLean, this framework explains how your brain evolved in layers, each shaping your behaviours. Understanding this is the first step to transforming your relationship with food and health.

The Neocortex

The Neocortex, the realm of conscious decision-making and rational thought, is your go-to brain for setting goals, crafting strategies, and making logical choices about food and exercise. It’s the brain you take to work—the planner, the problem-solver, the strategist. Yet, under the weight of emotional stress, it can be swiftly overridden by the powerful pull of the Limbic System.

The Emotional Brain

The Emotional Brain or Limbic System fuels your emotions, cravings, and behaviours. It’s where your feelings take root and compel you to act. Every day, I hear my clients express critical statements about themselves that highlight the immense shame and pressure they place on their own shoulders.

“I’ve tried everything, and nothing ever works for me.”

“I have no willpower. I can’t seem to stick to anything.”

“I always fall off track. I just can’t keep the momentum going.”

“I’ll never lose this weight. It’s always been a struggle.”

“I’m not strong enough to resist my cravings.”

“I’ve failed too many times, so I don’t even know where to start anymore.”

“I always sabotage myself. It feels like I’m my own worst enemy.”

These negative self-judgements aren’t just thoughts; they are a form of emotional weight, often more crippling than the physical weight clients struggle to lose. This relentless criticism activates feelings of shame, compounding the struggle to lose weight. A wise psychologist I worked with said: “If I had a pill for shame, I’d be a millionaire by now.” While I don’t have that pill, I do know that coaching acts as a guardian of your emotions.

The Reptilian Brain

When you become overwhelmed with stress, your Reptilian Brain—a deeply instinctual part of your mind focused on survival—springs into action. It is like an internal parent, always looking out for you, guiding you through stressful moments to ensure your survival. It activates the body’s systems to release energy, ensuring that you can respond quickly to immediate threats. In early vertebrates, it was focused solely on feeding, avoiding danger, and reproducing. But today, it encompasses the brainstem, basal ganglia, and cerebellum—regions responsible for your instincts, habits, and motor control. No longer limited to basic functions like smell, this primal brain is intricately connected with your Limbic System and Neocortex.

Effective Weight Loss

Effective weight loss isn’t just about food and exercise; it’s about addressing all three layers of the brain. We need to soothe and heal the Emotional Brain with support and coaching, engage the Neocortex with education, goal setting, and accountability, and acknowledge that while we have modern tools, we’re still working with the ancient programming of our Reptilian Brain.

By understanding how the three brains interact, we can begin to unravel the deeper reasons behind weight struggles. The true alchemy – the transformation – lies beyond logic. The magic unfolds when we delve into the brain, untangling thought patterns and healing triggers at their source. It’s here, in the dance between your brains, that the solutions are born, unlocking sustainable change.

Finally, it’s time to treat ourselves with kindness and stop the cycle of self-criticism. Learn to care for the body and mind you’ve been given, nurturing them in ways that will make you stronger, healthier, and happier. This is your opportunity to prioritise yourself and embrace lasting transformation.Let’s make this the year you succeed. Contact us now to get started!
